My Approach
I use a cognitive-behavioral therapeutic (CBT) approach when developing treatment plans with my clients. My role as the counselor is to listen, teach, and encourage the client as I walk alongside them through their journey of pain. The initial session is spent assessing the client’s symptoms, circumstances, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Past hurts, wounds, and traumas are evaluated to see how they are affecting the client’s present quality of life. Irrational and distorted thoughts are examined and replaced with realistic and productive thoughts.
One goal of therapy is to decrease self-defeating and maladaptive behaviors and paralyzing emotions. New coping skills are taught, acquired, and applied in practical and measurable ways. Subsequent sessions focus on implementing these coping skills to achieve the desired goals.
We may also work together to craft reading assignments and homework to help them unlearn unwanted reactions and learn new ways of responding.
Maintaining a balance physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and spiritually holds great value in life. Together we examine what areas are out of balance and then learn methods to bring create stability.
